P1 (3), Cisuralian Epoch (Early Permian)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the southwest of the Halar-Alate Mt. in the Wulhe area of Xinjiang. It was named by the Xinjiang Petroleum Administration in 1964, and was cited publically jointly by the Department of Geosciences of the Academy of Sciences of China and the Xinjiang Petroleum Administration in 1987.

Lithology and Thickness

Volcaniciastics and Conglomerate. The Lower member of the formation is composed mainly of variegated volcanic breccia, welded breccia, andesitic tuff and rhyolitic welded tuff. The Upper member is composed largely of grey-green thick-bedded conglomeratic layers, intercalated with purplish-red sandstone bands, sandstone lenses and clayey siltstone. A fault contact separates the two members. Thickness is 3088 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanic ash

Disconformable or unconformable contact with the underlying red siltstone layer of the Aladeikesai Fm of the upper Carboniferous Series.

Upper contact

Disconformable contact with the overlying Xiazijie Fm.

Regional extent

Distributed largely in the southeastern segment of the Hala-Alate Mt. in the Klamai subregion on the northwest margin of the Junggharyia.
